a) (C) a set of similar things that are kept or brought together because they are attractive or interesting: a stamp collection

b) (C) a group of things that are put together: A collection of empty wine bottles stood on the back porch.
2 MONEY
a) (C) the act of asking for money from people for a particular purpose: have a collection: Every Christmas we have a collection and give the money to a charity. | take (up) a collection: We'll be taking up a collection at the end of tonight's service.
b) (U) the act of obtaining money that is owed to you: Resistance to the new tax is making collection difficult.
3 TAKING STH AWAY (C, U) the act of taking something from a place, especially when this is done regularly: Garbage collections are made every Tuesday morning.
4 BRINGING TOGETHER (U) the act of bringing together things of the same type from different places to form a group: the collection of reliable data
5 CLOTHES (C) a number of different pieces of clothing designed by someone for a particular time of year: the Paris spring collections
6 PEOPLE (countable usually singular) a group of people, especially people you think are strange or unusual in some way: There was an interesting collection of people at the wedding.
7 BOOKS/MUSIC (C) several stories, poems, pieces of music etc that are in one book or on one record: A new collection of Frost's poetry
